Import Export Registration

In order to effectively monitor the various outflows and inflows of foreign exchange, the government has introduced Import Export Code Registration. IEC stands for Import Export Code and is a unique 10-digit number issued by Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), part of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, to any person or company for carrying on Import and Export business in India.

DGFT IEC Registration Online is mandatory to carry on export/import business in India for specified category of services or technologies. Import export code registration is done under DGFT website. An IEC number issued to applicant shall be valid for all its divisions/ units/ factories/ branches. IEC code is valid for lifetime and there is no need to renew the same.

Import Export Registration is not required if Import export made for personal use and not for trade, manufacture, or agriculture or Import export made by government offices and other notified institutions.

IEC registration is done online through Aayat niryat form 2A (ANF 2A) and is submitted to regional DGFT authority for approval, where the registered office of the company is situated. PAN card of the applicant is the basic and foremost most import document for Import Export Code Registration Online. IEC cannot be issued against the illegal and anti national security acts such as dealing in nuclear weapons, guns, smuggling etc.

Process of Import Export Code Registration

Pre-Requisites for Applying for Import Export Code Registration

Valid Login Credentials to DGFT Portal (After Registering on DGFT Portal)
IEC may be applied on behalf of a firm which may be a Proprietorship, Partnership, LLP, Limited Company, Trust, HUF, and Society.
The Firm must have an active Firm’s Permanent Account Number (PAN) and details like Name as per Pan, Date of Birth, or Incorporation.
The Firm must also have a bank account in the Name of the Firm and a valid address before applying.

Who Are Exempted From Obtaining The IEC?

Persons importing or exporting goods for personal use not connected with trade or manufacture or agriculture. Persons importing/exporting goods from/to Nepal,
Myanmar through Indo-Myanmar border areas and China (through Gunji, NamgayaShipkila and Nathula ports), provided CIF value of a single consignment does not exceed
Indian Rs.25,000. In case of Nathula port, the applicable value ceiling will be Rs. 1,00,000/-

Yes, individuals acting as Proprietors of a business can obtain IE Code Registration.

To obtain IE Code registration, a copy of the PAN Card, proof of address of the business, and constitution of the business [Partnership deed, Incorporation Certificate, etc.] and a letter from the banker are required.

IE Code Registration can be obtained from the DGFT in 10-15 working days after submission of all required documents and applications.

IE Code is not a mandatory registration, only importers and exporters of goods or services must have IE Code. Therefore, there is no penalty for not having IE Code; however, import/export will not be possible without an IE Code.
